|
|
More conflicting advice from the local piaggio dealers. What do you guys reckon?
Me: "Hello, have you got some synthetic 5w/40 SM or SL grade engine oil please".
Dealer: "No, sorry mate, don't sell it... wot d'ya won't that stuff for?".
Me: " Um, my Vespa GTS"
Dealer: "no mate, no one's ever asked me for that in the 18 years that I've been here".
Me: "Well that's what the manual recommends, so do the lads on the GTS forum".
Dealer: "No mate (again), you won't get that stuff round here, you should use 10w/40 SG for your GTS, besides that's wot the Piaggio technicians told us to use when they came round here. We use it on all GTSs when they come in for a serivice".
So what do you lot reckon. Is 10w/40 OK to use or was he talking out of his arse? |

Talking out of his arse
Brand doesnt really matter, just make sure its 5w/40 synthetic, and not low quality bike stuff (ie SG rating) SL or above...

BTW.... Halfords own brand car oil in 5w/40 is fine
We currently use Selenia but are moving over to Agip now piaggio have decided to swap recommendations.... mainly as it makes life easier with warranty |

Thanks Cheeky. Well I won't be taking my GTS there for a service. Can you imagine the shit they'd stick in my gearbox if that's what they recommend for engine oil? |

Guess what
After reading this I looked at my reciept for the first service on my G.T.S. at my local authorised Piaggio dealer, 1 litre of 10/40 engine oil.
Can I top this up with 5/40 or do I need to change the lot,
and if so how easy is it to remove the oil filter,
do I need the special tool. _________________ Live Slow Die young !

I would check the level it takes 1.3ltrs to fill it when you change the oil and filter. Personally, I would always use the recommended oil and never mix different grades. |

There are some proper shite dealers about, no wonder Italian machines get a bad reputation for being unreliable when the dealer technicians can't even read the bloody manual. |

I think if I was you I would insist they change the oil for the correct grade, you pay for a service inline with the official schedule written by piaggio.
If not get them to provide a written guarantee that they take responsibilty for any engine damage and an official verification from piaggio technicians that its ok to use the 10/40w oil, remember correct servicing must be carried out to maintain your warranty. |

It is a straight forward task and like you say by doing it youself you know its done right. I do all my own servicing there are no piaggio dealers in my area you would consider trusting. |
