As far as I`m aware the API sl spec is for engines up to 2004 and is therefore technically obsolete and the JASO MA spec is for 2007 onwards which is why I favour this oil for spec and value, apart from the fact we are Putoline dealers _________________

No API grades are still current, car oils use SM nowadays...
And no that putoline isnt API SL its SJ.. so not good enough according to piaggio... putoline do list a Ester technomoto 5w/40 which is API SL rated. |

As they bring newer and better oils out then the ratings change, modern oils are often better than the SL rating, and therefore they have introduced a SM grade...
Manufacturers will either quote a grade that must be used IE suzuki say the new GSXR1000K8 must only use API-SF or SG nothing higher.
Piaggio stated the oil must be API-SL or higher... so SL or SM or anything higher would be fine...
However anything lower is not good enough, as it wont be providing the lubrication that a better oil would... so even if the oil is synthetic and 5W/40 if its only API-SJ then its not good enough.

"QUOTE"
Hi Kevin,
SCOOT SPORT 4 is JASO MA, API SJ, Fully synthetic.
ACEA A3 is a car engine oil spec, we do not quote these on our scooter oils.
John can you confirm that SCOOT SPORT 4 will be suitable for the Piaggio ?
Regards, Graham
"END QUOTE"
so Scoot Sport 4 is OK to use? but SJ is lower spec than SL right?
more confused!! |

All modern Piaggio scooters run Car spec engine oil as they dont have wet clutches.... if its not API SL grade its NOT good enough, switch to a better brand, many companys make SL grade bike oil as most bikes from 2003 use it. |

Ive just brought some car oil after all autos dont have wet clutchs.
meets the API SI. 4 litres of it, mineral oil though but not for my scoot anyway
£4.88 , btw i used this stuff in my bandit and i used to thrash the fook out of it. i just told him to change it more regular. its only a cbr125 without oil filter anyway _________________
