Recently chatting with a biker (never a good idea, I know) who told me to fill my 125 with hi octane performance fuel as I'd get better economy as well as responsiveness Shocked Very Happy . Is this a good idea or would I be wasting my money?

Same here. Always run the GTS250ie on 98 octane premium unleaded.

I figure that it is so cheap to fill up anyway.......why be a complete tightarse?

My car on the other hand, is a Ford Falcon Futura. That gets bog standard unleaded Wink

Still runs like a champ though, but only gets out of the garage if I have a weeks shopping to do or the weather is crap (which is rare here).

I know it works good for the big 250's it's the little 125cc that I was really asking about.
I think Oz petrol is probably a lot cheaper than what we pay here in old blighty anyway Crying or Very sad

Not fully run in yet but tried 95 and got some pinking......a tinny rattle at low RPM on gradual hills. Switched to Shell V-Power and it the scoot seems quicker with no rattle. 97 is OK too but will stick with the Shell stuff.

having recently bought a gts (wife & i travelled by train from darlington to tiverton, devon) rode back, kept topping tank up with all type,s of petrol on long (342 mile,s door to door) journey home, i found the last fill up was with v-power and the scoot definately preformed better on it (many thank,s to richard tiverton for a fine well looked after machine) ps doesnt like o/s/r indicator bulb,s though.

Use whatever is recommended by the manufacturer. Octane rating is the measure by how much gasoline can be compressed before it self ignites (detonates), (in extreme cases, known as dieseling, when you turn the key off and the thing just keeps running *does not apply to electronic fuel injected motors that shut off the fuel flow*).

The higher the compression ratio, the greater the need for higher octane fuel to reduce/eliminate knocking and pinging caused by detonation. Detonation can cause extremely high pressures in the combustion chamber leading to engine stress and failure. It can also lead to extremely high temperatures in the combustion chamber with increased wear and eventually failure of internal parts.

Using higher octane gasoline than recommended will not hurt your engine but will not give any improved performance. (Although many, many people claim it does from seat of the pants feel).

Using lower grade fuel than recommended can cause engine wear and in extreme cases, failure.

Octane is not a performance additive.

Thanks Dave for the comprehensive answer - I think! The big question is surely what do Piaggio recommend and will higher octane fuel damage the engine over time?
I guess I should be keeping the tank filled with bog standard unleaded if the manual is anything to go by. Which it usually is Wink

Bog standard here in Oz is 92. The manual (from memory - so I could be wrong), says minimum 95.

Higher octane fuel won't damage your engine, but lower might.

Fuel economy is allegedly the biggest benefit - I'll get back to you on this once Ive gone through a whole tank. Bog standard unleaded gave me 160km.If I hit 200km I'll be happy to keep up the hi octane diet.
