It does depend on the grade of the bolt... they need to be very high tensile not normal 8.8s... but still some people dont like them, and ideally they should be replaced each time... but people dont.

It is better to use titanium without a doubt...

Surely you are talking about shear strength not tensile, cos i thought we were screwing them into cast ally and won't get anywhere near its tensile strength Shocked

Tensile strength is directly linked to shear strength... if you want a stronger bolt you get a higher tensile one. This will give an increased tensile strength and shear strength.

From a few years ago when i did my Advanced GNVQ in engineering i think common steels shear strength is 0.6 times its tensile strength... or something like that. Wink

The caliper bolts are specifically loaded in shear i.e. 90 deg. from the bolt that is what I meant and yes there is a direct correlation between tensile and shear but it varies for every metal. Well it's been 20 yrs since I did my HTC in mechanical engineering but I thought it was .7 ish for stainless but who cares. I'm gonna have a chat with probolt tech tomorrow but I already know what they'll say (err on the safe side to cover their back) so it looks like another thirty quid for eight bolts then.

Well the stainless bolts from probolt are perfectly ok to use on brake calipers. Exclamation Exclamation

I work as an engineer in a food factory and we have to use stainless, we use the A2 grade and the fittings are very brittle compared to mild steel, where mild steel stretches, stainless breaks, also you all forgetting another problem with stainless, it reacts with alloy and welds together very easily!!!

Indeed it does... but as you should be copper slipping things it should be ok... its the same with Titanium, you need to use a proper lube or itll weld itself together.
