+++ WARNING! +++ NOOBY QUESTION INCOMING +++ WARNING! +++
So, I've had the first service and things are 'run in'. Does that mean I can sit on full throttle/9000 revs for 200 miles without a problem? What is sensible usage? What will make a Quasar 250 blow up and what will keep it in good order for longer?
As ever, thanks for any advice! _________________ Do two and 1/4 rallies mean I'm not a scoot noob anymore? |

whats this.. challenge Gav
I reckon the only way you'd blow the engine up (assuming already you've lubricated it) is by bypassing the rev-limiter, at 9000 it doesn't really feel like its working hard at all? |

I think I got it up over 8000 or so on the way to Chelmsford last night - made 80mph, then I thought "hmm. I'm pretty sure the spec said 'top speed 72' so I wonder if I'm shafting the engine..."
Hard to tell if it's "working hard" for a noob like me. What would that feel like? (I sure can't hear it well).
I really have no experience with clutchless engines or scooter engines. Is it even possible to rag one? I know I had the throttle wide open during a couple of overtaking manueovers last night, but if I just sat there, full throttle, 80mph for 2 hours down the M4, is the engine going to have a fit even if it's well maintained? If I do that every weekend for a year will the engine fall out twice as fast as if I pootle about the 'lesser' roads varying the revs?
I just don't know what 'reasonable' usage is on a scoot, cause I've always driven cars and, unless you have a serous heap of junk, you just don't need to use high revs for any length of time to get where you're going (unless you use the autobahn at 130mph every day I suppose).
A 250cc engine, however, is different, especially with Big Dave (me) on it - full throttle = 80mph, so I could sit there on 9000 revs for a long old time without crashing or worrying about coppers, but, am I going to damage my scooter, or worse, seize it and throw myself down the M4 this weekend? _________________ Do two and 1/4 rallies mean I'm not a scoot noob anymore? |

Are we saying that, for all these kinds of engine, they are limited (and 'cut out') at 'damaging' revs? So, unless there's some kind of fault or you fiddle with the limiter, you are 'safe'?
In that case, cool I'll twist away and not worry!
My only trouble might be if I twist hard and, due to an incline and my huge belly, I don't manage to pull out in front of that lorry after all... _________________ Do two and 1/4 rallies mean I'm not a scoot noob anymore? |

They are very difficult to abuse (speed wise). You will know when you've hit the rev-limiter (feels like its fooked, and someones yanking the back of your shirt), so if youre like me, i sit just under 9k (80mph on clock), and i reckon it'd just go on forever like that. If you've got a "worrying about my scooter blowing up" fetish, go and buy a Lambretta |

*grin* okie dokie ta. It's not that I'm a worrier, I'd just rather sound ignorant and ask than do something stupid.
Unless the issue is taking the scooter off the stand. With that, I like to stand there tugging backwards wondering why it doesn't fold up... What a plonker... In my defence, I have never used a centre stand and I didn't put it up there... Still stupid? Yeah, I guess so _________________ Do two and 1/4 rallies mean I'm not a scoot noob anymore? |

Took one from Belguim right up through Holland to German boarder the other year and literally sat at indicated 80-90 for the whole duration (6 hours) only stopping for fuel ....it never felt at any stage I was wringing the neck out of it even when I was bouncing it off the rev limiter
This was the point I realised that autos are bloody ace for long hauls....the same trip on my lamby would have seen me in bloody agony and would have taken 2-3 hours longer (and cost 3 times as much in fuel)
So in a word dont be affraid to "give it some" it won't hurt it

Smashing! I've got to say, even with my very limited experience, I am loving not having gears. In traffic last night I was concentrating on mirrors, over-the-shoulder, multiple lanes of drifting cars, etc. and not having to do all that squeeze-tap-tap-tap-release stuff as well was a joy!
I still know I'm gonna be tempted one day to get a geared oldie, though... glad I did the test on a geared bike! _________________ Do two and 1/4 rallies mean I'm not a scoot noob anymore? |

Running low on oil, sounds obvious but regular checks are needed as its not uncommon to get a little crankcase pressure shove some oil through the breather system into the airbox.. it doesnt need to do this often to leave the engine too short on oil to be happy at higher rpms... after all it only holds 1 litre of oil which isnt a great deal.
But the Biggest killer of the quasar or leader engines...
Over tight valve clearances... if your lucky it just gets bad to start or cuts out often.. if not it gets messy

i killed my 200 so my opinion might not help
part failure im sure as no mechanic had seen the flywheel side of the crank snap
i cain my bike alot. it only gets really revvy at 70-80, but doesnt really affect it sometimes it runs better afterwards.
im like everyone a whole tank of fuel non stop flat out isnt uncommon
there cheap to fix if they go wrong anyway _________________

dave, keep it standard, check the oil and wring it's neck all the way
the first time the rev limiter kicks in you'll shit yourself, feels like someones tugging at the back end trying to pull you off (viz again? fnarr fnarr!) _________________
