I had a new tyre fitted on Friday to the rear wheel; Saturday I refitted the wheel to the scooter. So I thought I'd go for a test ride to check out the guys static balancing. I'd done about 10 miles before stopping to fill up with petrol, before heading up the motorway to see how it felt at speed. Only went up to the next junction before turning off at Saddleworth Moors.
Now at the end of the slip road is a cattle grid on a slight bend in the road about 15 feet before the give way lines, all was fine until the rear wheel went over the grid, next thing I knew scooter was going sideways then down on the ground. I picked myself up (I’m unhurt apart from a slight twisted knee). Two cars went past whilst scooter was still lying on its side and neither of the twats stopped to ask if I was ok.
Anyway, I thought oh no, those panels are going to be fucked! Picked the bike up (putting the handbrake on first is a good help) looked at it and was totally shocked, no damage that I could see. Now I made two white scratches in the road surface, one from the exhaust clamp bolt, the other from the silencer itself, which isn’t too badly marked, I think it’ll clean up ok
I don’t think I could’ve been doing any more than 15mph over the grid, but couldn’t say for sure.
So, wet roads, new tyres and cattle grids don’t mix. _________________ Gilera Fuoco 500ie

Bad luck but good news you are in one piece. I never guessed a Fuoco would behave like that! _________________ Vespa 300 super BSA Bantam, pushbike |

Yes sorry to hear that, as implied, new tyres and wet metal dont mix, no cattle grids here but a few places where you cross Tram tracks, avoid em like the plague! _________________ GTS250 its the future!!! A club wi owt a name sc. Bamberbridge. |

Wow glad you made it! I went over a grid couple of weeks ago almost before I had realised. Good thing I was going slow and it wasn't near a bend, coz the big wheel slithered around nastily.
*Surely* There should be a law against them things! And putting manholes on corners! And painting fooking great arrows in the middle of the road.
I know most road users are car drivers, but you'd think the hundreds (thousands?) of police bike riders would have had something to say about how those in charge of roads don't really "Think Bike", eh? _________________ Do two and 1/4 rallies mean I'm not a scoot noob anymore? |
