I've been running on a pair of Avon Viper Strykes since last October (140 rear), Ive had the scoot garaged over the winter and been using it for work over the past coupla weeks.
On the way home this evening the handling felt a bit odd, and when I rode into my street I could feel a bump.....bump......bump coming from the rear wheel.
When I had a look the rear tyre had a 'baseball' size bulge on the profile, and had broke the rear mudguard.
I've never experienced any rubbing on the mudguard before, so I was a bit surprised at what I was looking at on the tyre.
I run a normal pressure on the rear (29psi), so what do you guys reckon ? Dodgy tyre ?
Ive sent an email to Avon about it, I'll let you know how I get on.

That sounds like the reinforcing cords of the sidewall have broken up, allowing the air to push on the sidewall, causing the bulge. unless you have been running on a flat tyre, it sounds like a faulty tyre. The rubber can deteriorate if the machine is left standing over winter, but I would have thought that this relatively short period is not long enough to cause severe deterioation of the tyre. Speak to the manufacturer of the tyre.

Avon.... says enough for me.... seriously not a fan. Mad

But yes sounds like the tyres construction has failed... Avon do blab on about tyre warranty so they might change it for you Question

Cheers for the replies !

I've had a reply from Avon requesting me to go thru my supplier, thats what i get for anticipating the retailer (MPS Accessories) telling me to go direct to Avon !

I choose Avon because of good memories I had with Avon 3.50x10 Gripsters (I even had a pair on my old Group 4 Racer for wet races Confused circa 1984) But I do agree I have no confidence in them in the wet either

35 psi sounds a bit hefty to me......is that what other people are using too ??

i like the tyres alot harder so i can feel the road surface better. the ride is really rough but i dont care, i've got a bitubo and the harder rear springs so its mega rough. which is great when i go out for a blast about on the helmsley tt every so often

i also carry alot of heavy gear, skates, knee pads and a skateboard on the back so it makes sense really.

i played with them a little. too little pressure and it wobbled and handled like crap round corners, especially with the way i ride on some country lanes.

i've not had any problem with the tyres wearing in the middle quickly at all. they even seem to last a little longer with more pressure in.

it depends on rider weight really, i weigh a tad over 10st so with all my luggage i weigh as much as a big bloke.

when i inflated them to the standard pressure they seemed to be kinda flat to me. i get the wobble at the "correct" pressure as well which is funny.

Just a thought, but according to the Sale of Goods act, if you have bought a faulty item from a retailer, it is their legal responsibilty to replace it and not refer you to the manufacturer. You did'nt buy it from the manufacturer. Worth considering if you get any grief over a replacement tyre. The retailer should replace the item for you, and in return, claim this back from their supplier.

Latest Update:
I spoke to the Customer Services Dept at M & P Accessories who I bought the Tyres from, and although in the interim I've had to buy a new Tyre to keep me on the road, they were extremely helpful (thanks John & Cheryl).

The only bummer is I need to send the damaged tyre down to them to be sent to Avon for analysis, its not so much doing that thats the pain, its the hassle of getting the flippin' tyre changed......such is life I suppose.

John from M & P said that they were a Vespa/Gilera dealer so they should be able to get a new rear mudguard, so I'm appreciating the convienience factor there (Seeing as theres no Vespa agent anywhere in Glasgow or the West of Scotland........get yer finger out Piaggio !!)

35 psi on Avons still seems mental to me, I'm about 18stone these days
and 29/30 psi is just right, I dont see that any riding style would compensate for that tbh.
