Needing a new tyre, and have ordered a continental zippy 1 for the job, and I was quoted about £25 for fitting it (rear wheel job). My basic query is, how simple a job is it? Has anyone tackled it and encountered unforeseen problems?

thanks in advance.

Soul-Ger.

It requires the removal of the silencer and rear shock bracket behind it. This job is not too taxing but if the bolts don't come out easy with the correct star type socket or if the rear shock mounting bracket is siezed on then it can quickly become a nightmare. You must change the exhaust gasket before you refit the silencer and it is a good idea to grease or coat bolts with coppercrest before re-assembly, this will make the job easier in the future. So if you don't like getting your hands dirty and can trust the tyre fitters to do it right £25 may not be a bad price.

Mine blew yesterday at 80, no fuss just cruise to a halt. Have had to fit what I could get hold of at short notice as I need to work tomorrow. A Deli Tire no less, hmmm think it will be changed soon. Cheap though, £30 fitted to the wheel and balanced.
Taking the wheel off is no real problem and there is no real voodoo mechanicery involved, it's just more time consuming than others. Tip: have a spare split pin.

Ok, thanks a lot for the input Very Happy Cool

Can't get the "big" nut off. What a c*nt! Mostly on account of my largest socket being 22mm. Anyone know the exact size of the nut? Looks to be about 24mm.

Just for the record, the big nut that attaches the bracket is indeed 24mm, and it won't budge. I have tried roasting it with a blow torch, and have sprayed on large amounts of plus gas, and it still won't budge.

Do Piaggio fix these things on with a strong adhesive?

silly question , but you have removed the split pin

how are you stopping the shaft from turning as it needs to be locked from the engine side using a clutch holding tool or at least the rear brake

Off the top of my head I think they are torqued to 130Lb. If you have used a blowtorch I would check the bearing just behind it as it has plastic seals. I just use a very long torque wrench and the back brake. You could insert 2 decent size screwdrivers into the holes to hold the clutch maybe?

velcro strap round back brake lever, 24mm socket, and a longish breaker bar does the trick for me Cool

Rear brake and a decent length bar should move it easy enough... if the nuts that hard to remove the brace arm might be a right pig...

This is exactly what was needed. It took about four boots (with my steel toed workies on) before it began to loosen, very loudly I hasten to add.

The finished article (thank f**k)

its easy... just loosen it off with a windy gun.

zipp, done.

you wanna check your rear pads while you have the wheel off.

if you get yourself a windy gun from b&q it saves LOADS of hassle with almost welded on nuts and bolts.

I thought about that, but time wasn't on my side unfortunately. Now that I know what i'm doing, I can check them another day. Sometime soon I reckon.
