Tappets are the valve clearances, should be done regularly as it provides the working clearance needed between the valve and cam to allow for expansion of the metal when it gets hot...

... failure to do them regularly can cause massive amounts of damage.

They take no longer than an hour to do, and dont require special tools apart from some feeler gauges Very Happy

Yeah, it should be. Ask for it to be done. I asked one Derbyshire dealer to do it, only to be told, "We don't do those unless there are running problems."

I promptly left, and took it to somewhere who knew what they were doing!

what he really meant was, "we dont do those until it pops a valve and it destroys your whole top end the day after the warranty runs out so you can bring it to us and spend your life savings on your shopping bike...."

When you do them depends on the engine...

The GT125/200 models have a 6000km service interval, and need valves done at 6000km then every 18,000km after that....

The GTS250/300 models have a 10,000km service interval, and need valves done every 20,000km....

so in theory mine dont need doing yet.
its just that i read some tech tips on the internet taht says poor accleration when engine is cold is because tappets maybe too tight and need adjusting...............is this correct because my scooter has this symptom.
infact even on a sunny morning i need to go awhile before it will egt past 40. when the engine does get hot then its ok
what does anyone think?

Cheeky knows his stuff, no doubt about it, take heed, but would it be worth trying some Redex type addative to the petrol too?

Redex has been out for donkeys years, it now comes in a few different types, basically its upper cylinder lubricant, ie it lubricates valves, a bit like 2 stroke oil does for 2 stroke engines, yes I know 2 strokes dont have valves, but you mix it in the recommended doseage in the petrol, it also helps keep the injectors clean and reduce shit build up in the cylinder, if you beleive all the claims they make, but for a couple of quid try it?

tappets open and close the inlet and ehaust valves within the head. They are driven by the camshaft.Too large a gap between tappet and cam equals noise and possible power loss .Too tight is the real danger as when the engine heats up the valves may not fully shut due too insuficient tollerance. This can lead to them being burnt out resulting in compression loss and lack of power. Then you would need new valves and possibly valve seats.Check the gap!
