|

Having suffered a 2nd exhaust manifold fracture in 400miles I have now got to the bottom of this issue, I must have been blind not to see the problem earlier.
The silencer/rear shock bracket was not attatched to the engine casing because of the failure of the two securing bolts. This meant that the exhaust was acting as a support for the rear shock and bracket hence it kept fracturing at the weakest point on the manifold.
I purchased the scooter 2nd hand with a fairly new rear tyre so not certain that the bolts were refitted correctly. I had to drill n re-tap the top bolt because it had sheared off in the casing (scary) and the bottom one was missing completely but the thread was fine. It is possible the bottom bolt was never fitted because you need to remove the silencer to fit it.
My advice is if your exhaust manifold fractures check these bolts are secure , I hope this is a one of instance of these bolts failing due to them not being fitted correctly and not a design issue.
Anyone else experienced this problem????

Ah! ... at least you know why it happened now.
I would guess bottom bolt fell out, the top snapped off as it took all the load, then the downpipe took the strain until it couldnt any longer...
At least it should be fine next time! |

I agree it is important that these issues get highlighted so everyone can learn from the experience. It has smashed my confidence in the scooter, you expect reliability issues with old scooters not modern ones. I have considered selling it but decided that i need to give it a chance now that i have identified and fixed the fault. So with three rallies planned over the next 5 weeks we will see!!
I guess i know why i got it so cheap in the first place. |

Don't let this put you off what is a fantastic scooter. You may have seen that some of us did a tour of Scotland in July on four GTSs (and one Nexus ) up to the highlands & Isles of Scotland (Isle of Ske was the furthest north we got) we did between 1000-1350 miles in 5 days and none of the scooters missed a beat.
Get a few rallys under your belt and you'll be well happy and you can look forward to some long distance scootering. _________________
