I decided to run to the ACE (north London) on Saturday morning for a breakfast. Apart from the fact that it was bloody freezing and the poor scoot ended up white with salt it was a good morning out. The 300 performed perfectly and did the whole journey on 9 pounds worth of fuel, the distance from Hayling Island I do not know but going via the Meon valley via Alton then M3 - M25 -M4- north circular felt like about 80- 90 miles. On the country roads the performance is adequate but on the motorway all is well up to 75mph then there is a black hole just a slow build up. More power is needed between 75-85 mph I don't need the bike to do much more but as it is it will need tinkering . So first its pm pipe and pm gizmo electric thingamegig, has anyone done that yet? I know someone has posted the conversion resulting in 100mph but I find that hard to quantify without a lot more power than is shown on the graph that Cheeky posted. I would spend the money on a variator kit to boost rideability... an exhaust might offer a little gain, but you really only buy them for the noise.
Getting decent noticable gains on a 4t without spending a lot of money is hard work. |

But you can be guinea pig anyday!
(Dont forget the free performance increase available from dealers via the ECU upgrade) |

polini with mixed weights or Dr pully sliders are proven on the 250 so should work on the 300 , i think the molossi ones are a bit weeker _________________ Darkside, Norwich Broadsmen SC

Agreed, polini, but don't mix the weights 13 or 14 gramm is about right and stay with the standard belt. And Don't beleive everything you read on PM's site too _________________

TFI unit complete waste of money unless like myself you happen to have access to a dyno for a whole day,but for the average punter at 50 quid an hour not happenin`back to back dyno runs with malossi and polini variators shows no difference except the polini locks out earlier and the malossi holds on slightly longer.PM pipe does show a proggressive gain across the whole rev range but not as much as stated,14gram rollers and a 140 rear tyre will sort out top end speed with variator. _________________

Have you got a screen fitted? My 250 felt a bit nippier when I fitted one. |

I had a DR.Pulley variator in my GT200, with excellent results.
But I have fitted a Polini variator to my GTS, as a consequence of that variator review in Scootering magazine. I am surprised that 13-14 grams is recommended here, as PM provide the Polini with 11.8 gram rollers, and these keep my revs at 8500rpm when full throttle accelerating or hill-climbing, where the scooters max power is.

the rollers that come with the variator are wot polini supply,i run 14 grms in my malossi vario ....no probs,on the 250/300 you would hit the rev limiter all the time with rollers of that weight, however with a larger back tire this wouldn`t be the case, also depends on whether you are 2up as well, but fitted loads and the best results definetly aint with 11.8 grms. _________________

Alternatively you can take your scoot to a Bike tuner used to setting power commanders; the PM box is actually the same as a very basic power commander. It's still likely to cost you a hundred quid or more, so it makes the TFI box very expensive before you see any real gains.
As for the Polini versus Malossi variators, I found the Polini to be far better made than the Malossi, The Malossi failed on me due to wear of the bronze bush in the sliding pulley. The Polini uses a lubricated slider, which to my mind is s big improvement over the Malossi, and it's cheaper too.
The 11g rollers sent with the polini make it sound like a pizza delivery scoot _________________

There's also the J Costa.Different design and more expensive but the rollers/bullets are supposed to last longer than polini rollers.I've got one fitted on my 250 and I realy like it.Takes off like a bullet, especialy rolling on from 20 or 30,sits happily at an indicated 90 with plenty to spare. What I like most though is its very smooth. |
