hello,
i am still getting used to my GTS....just a couple quetions for you experienced riders,
(1)how much play (if any) should there be on the throttle before it pulls the scooter away?
(2) when stopped at lights, junctions etc, why does the engine sound difthanksferent with less vibration when i have the rear brake lever pulled in?

thanks Very Happy

the rear brake makes the scooter vibrate more when you have the rear brake pulled in because when the brake is pulled in the fluid in the brake hose acts as a solid and transfers the vibrations more easily Cool

as for the free play in the throttle there should be a bit but not loads Laughing

Any play in the throttle will {should} be ajusted on your 1st service after everything has settled in, and in reply to the rear brake vibration, what he said, use the front Wink

1) It depends on what sort of play your talking about... if its the throttle itself feels loose, and doesnt seem to pull the cable until the throttles twisted quite a way, then it needs adjusting, and should be done each service...

...but if you mean the fact you can open the throttle a little, and the engine revs more but doesnt pull away, thats due to the fact its an automatic and the drive system needs centrifugal force to operate. Theres no direct connection from engine to wheel unlike with a clutch so you need to build the revs up until you feel the bike start to move and this is normal... once youve got used to the bike, you wont be as afraid to wind the throttle open more, which gets the drivesystem engaged quicker...

2)Being an automatic the drivebelt from the engine to the rear wheel is always spinning when the engines running, even when stationary the friction in the drivesystem can make the bike pulse slightly when stopped, holding the brake on will reduce the pulses... however if it drematically effects engine note then its likely the tickover is slightly too high, and the drive system is slightly engaged still and its trying to creep forward ever-so-slightly.... again this should be sorted at the next service or sooner if you live close and can get it on the dealers box of tricks to adjust it a little Very Happy

Whats your impressions of the GTS then?? Got used to the slightly quirky handling and been bitten by the cheeky italians character yet Wink

Mine does nothing for about an eighth of a turn. Sounds like that needs adjusting. They didn't do it at my last service. Not very impressed with them - this is just another example.

Is it easy to do yourself (on an MP3 with all that dang molded covering on the handlebars)?

Use the adjuster on the throttle body as its easier to get to on the MP3 Wink

Undo the small locking nut...

Then screw the other adjuster nut out a little until the free-play is right, then lock it in position with the other locking nut again...

Takes seconds... Wink

(12mm spanner if i remember right)

Dear Cheeky,

everything you've said there makes sense in relation to my GTS, you have completely described and answered my query!! thank you.

I am still unsure with regards to the auto v geared debate as of yet... i am getting there but the scoot still doesn't feel completely under my control !! do you know what I mean? But when pulling away from lights etc it is a little italian rocket!!

Yesterday it didn't seem so big and bulky to me as it did before, I hate the speedo, can't see 20 to 40 properly (need to avoid those pesky speed cameras)

When I bought it, it had only had its first service ages ago (its 2 and a half years old, 06 plate) I have booked it into the local Piaggio/Vespa dealer for its 11,000 km service. This will be its 2nd service, so it has missed a couple!!

Missed some on time basis... but not mileage.

GTS should be serviced every 10,000km or 12 months whichever comes first... ignore the service book if its the old school one with blue tear off pages, its well out of date Wink

You have to adapt your riding to suit an auto, and it takes time, youll soon get the hang of it no end.... it sounds wrong to say, but works out to be right, but with an auto you need to ride it more aggressively than a manual, dont pansy with the throttle as it gives a vagueness and lack of responce, your better off giving it more throttle quickly, and then shutting it off to the speed you want.

And yes all piaggio speedos could be a little more MPH friendly... the joys of dual speed readings....
