Just a click from down near the engine, then nothing.

The battery voltage was a bit low, so I charged it for 3 hours and tried again - nothing. But the battery voltage dropped again, so it could be an electrical problem.

I don't know whether the click is a relay operating, or the starter trying to engage the variator gear and failing. So tomorrow I will check fuses, then open the transmission and see if there is anything wrong there, and then check the starter motor.

Any other suggestions on where to look?

Oh! For a kickstart!

Mike

battery should be at 13 volts

sound is probably starter clicking as it doesn't have enough umph to turn the engine over

Thanks for the advice, fellas, but you were wrong.

I tried starting it from the car battery, but no go. So I opened up the tansmission, and found the starter gear was jammed on the variator gear. Further examination revealed that the Dr.Pulley sliders were worn in odd places on their edges, and the bush inside the Malossi variator half-pulley had worn loose.

So now the scooter has the original Piaggio variator refitted, and starts fine, and I will test-run it tomorrow. I will be interested to see how the standard variator gets on with the Malossi clutch springs.

Mike
