Just installed a J.Costa variator in my GT. Makes all the other mods look silly!

Mike,
It makes that much difference?
Can you give us a review? I'm really interested in your views.
Cheers,

Hi Kev,
I do not have any figures to back up my gut feelings, but acceleration is much improved at least up to 90kph. I have just been testing it on a freeway, and top speed seems to be 3-5kph more, but Sydney is built on a river basin, and there are no straight, level roads and too much traffic, so it will take a week or more of monitoring to form a more definite conclusion.
Installation is dead easy, if you have the tools for working on the transmission. A little more work for me, as I had to disassemble the clutch to change the springs.

The contra spring. I had been running with the spring that came with my Malossi variator, but the J.Costa instructions say you should have the standard spring as this is what their variator is designed to wiork with.

The J.Costa web site lists a whole lot of dealers - all in Spain!
I ordered mine from Scootertrap in the U.S. of A. You should be able to organise something better, like a Spanish holiday.

Mike,
I'm still in warranty, and pretty happy with the performance of the stock GTS.
But a bit more speed never goes astray.
My planned mods are the J Costa Variator and Leo Vinci exhaust. From what I've read the Costa variator gives smooth power from take-off and the lag experienced with the standard variator is not apparent.
If you can verify that this is your experience - I'm sold!!
The only issue then is to decide if I wait until I'm out of warranty before the performance mods, just in case I've got any dramas.
I can live with the standard performance until then - it isn't shabby at all and I can report I'm one very happy owner.
Weather here is ideal for scooting, and the GTS certainly surprises plenty of punters as here in Perth it is the land of the 50cc scooter (you can ride them on a car license).
Cheers,
Kev |

Hi Kev,
Yes, I am sure the J.Costa variator will give you what you are looking for at this stage.
I guess the next stage for you would be the PM Tuning gadget to override the injector's tuning. The fuel injection system comes tuned to meet Euro 3 emission regulations, not tuned for performance, and gives a weak mixture.
Visited Perth last year. No traffic jams! Great city to scoot around in.

I second Mike on his findings. I put one on my GTS while it was still under warranty. I do my own maintenance and figure it's easy enough to change back to stock if I ever have to take it in to a shop for anything covered by Vespa. The extra top sped is nice but it is only a slight difference, the greatest differences are the lack of lag on take off and the much, much improved acceleration. I shaved 2 seconds off my 0 - 100 km/h time.

Thanks Mike & Rub,
sounds like the PM tuning device is my next stop. I really appreciate the advice as without helpful advice from guys like you it would be easy to spend a ton and not really get the results I'm after.
It's funny but when I first got the GTS I was happy as Larry with the standard performance - but like any bike/scoot after awhile you always think that a bit more speed wouldn't hurt
Have just got back in from Canberra. Saw a few Vespas there including a nice clean GT in white with the snakeskin seat parked in Civic.
Cheers,
Kev |
