1. I fitted the Costa variator, and did the nut up too trightly using an impact wrench. I tried a new nut, and it went on with a little difficulty, but torqued up to the correct tightness. So I assumed there was little damage to the crankshaft thread.
2. I was wrong, and the nut had just tightened up on the damaged crankshaft before locking the variator up tightly. So the variator was a little loose.
3. Because of this looseness, the variator bell managed to twist slightly, and things started to go wrong in the variator.
4. When I opened the transmission case, I saw the damage to the variator, and assumed that the variator pins had worn drastically and unevenly, with the end of one of them disintegrating.
5. When I then tried to put the original Piaggio variator back, the nut just kept turning, and I realised that the crankshaft was shot. Further examination of the Costa variator bell showed that it had been twisted and was scraping on the transmission case behind and on the inner part of the variator.
6. I still cannot explain the symptoms I experienced on the basis of the above, but I am sure that is the whole story.
Mike.
NB. I have had a variator come loose once, and the friction against the metal plate inside the transmission cover melted the black plastic thingummy that holds the filter. That was why I took to using an impact driver to tighten tht nut. |
jeez that would have vibrated like crazy! _________________ revolution deathsquad! |

Are you fitting the crank or getting somewhere to do it for you?
If doing it yourself, remember to get the right FC code as they are slightly different sizes depending on the bearings inner diameter... |

How do I change the title of this topic? I would like to indicate that the failure was not with the variator, eg. "Costa Variator Failure - absolved", or something like that.
Do I just enter a new subject headng while replying to it?

The only way to tune a GT is to replace it with a GTS, love that quote!!
My opinion on forums naming product failures and the like, I think it’s a great thing and if this causes sales to fall then all the better as this in turn will improve the product.
People power, us lot sharing tips and info is fantastic and one of the best products of the internet we do tend to “fluff” thinks up a little, human nature.
If the product manufacturer wants to listen to the customer then they would be advised to read forums like this. _________________ Simon Cuerden

i have fitted a J Costa variator and it's the best piece of kit i've ever had. the difference in performance is incredible. They are now available in the UK and i purchased one through the UK company - couldn't have been more helpful, they were great. Check out www.jcostacompetition.co.uk and note that these variators are manufactured in Spain and not the far east. |
