I know that most people say that the heavy rear springs are similar to having a "hardtail".... but I am a big guy 390#
I have the stock shocks on the 3rd setting and they are good but I was wondering about a good upgrade.
I also read about putting a 130 tyre on front and a 140 on rear any feedback?
I love my clashmobile GTS |

Dont even get me started on fitting silly hard springs to the standard shocks Bad move
Theyve become popular as the std ones are quite soft and as a CHEAP bodge way round aftermarket exhaust/bodywork issues... they kill the handling of the machine.
Firstly the springs strength is so high that the force needed to move them is greater than the shocks compression dampening abilty so you get no controlled downward motion...
Then the springs rebound energy is so high the shock doesnt have the guts to slow it down so you end up with no controlled upward motion...
So with the above 2 functions of the shock absorber being killed completely theres no need for it to be fitted. Fit a leaked out dead shock to one and see, makes no difference at all, still acts the same...
If you found a matched set of heavy duty dampers so they wasnt so dramatically overpowered by the springs it would be another whole different story though.
If possible, always buy matched shock/spring combinations. |

I did look at his and just think to myself...
Stops his exhaust hitting and thats why he has them, and if a cheap set of something decent comes up he might be tempted to get proper handling back one day... well at least i hope. |

Soft maybe.... but matched
Yours is massively over sprung and under dampened.... do a track day on it and check ya tyre afterwards, it would look like a 50p coin as the tyres doing the suspensions work... but for a shopping bike i guess it dont matter |

My brother has Bitubo springs, i have standard. I have ridden both and to be honest can't tell any difference. The Bitubo's just look nicer and will be harder wearing. |

I think Budweiser has SP4U springs on, as have I, and I think my scoot handles very well. But then mine has a bigger load to carry than everyone else _________________

Ive highlighted the important bit in the sentence there
The standard shocks are very soft, and so are the springs.... if only the springs were soft you would be able to push the suspension down easy but it would be slow to return as the damper would overpower the springs effort to try and regain its length... but it doesnt as the 2 are "matched" so they act together and provide a smooth operation...
... now when you jab a heavy old spring on there with the same soft shock, IF you get the suspension to compress, when it rebounds the spring has more strength trying to regain its normal shape than the shock can dampen out and the spring just plain overpowers it.
You dont realise how much difference suspension set up makes until you start pushing things harder, when setting up the race bikes it amazed me how a slight adjustment can turn good into tyre shreddingly bad, its such a fine line...
As the GTS shocks are nothing special, just simple one piece units with standard ends, has anyone looked into normal replacements that are just stronger and better quality without all the fancy names, shiny bits and twiddly knobs?? |

Oh right.
I still cannot tell any difference in handling. But i will say both machines handle brilliantly, although i am used to riding PX200s and Lambretta's. |
