Hi all,
hope some of you can give me some advice despite having a humble GT!. I just took my 03 GT125 in to Moonrakers in Norwich and have been told that the front fork linkage has seized and therefore needs new forks fitted (Can it not be freed up even if it needs taking apart?) Also that the engine mounts are badly worn. This is fine, however they have quoted me more than the scoot is worth to fix!!!!
My question really is, do i bother trying to find out if someone is pulling my leg (i got charged half hour labour also for the privelege!) or just take a hit and sell up as "spares or repair"? (I do plan on taking the test and getting a 200 or 250 later this year anyway) She has been regularly serviced and has been absolutely no trouble for the last year and a half (only cost me £80 for a new regulator unit - cheap scooting). Also if i do get shot what do you think she would fetch on fleabay or somewhere?
Thanks in advance.....

If Cheeky Thomas does'nt reply to this post, try sending him a private message. He is a professional bike/scooter mechanic, and will give you some good definitive advice. |

Trying to quote for something on the net is a little impossible... but advise is easy enough..
What is actaully wrong with the forks, they dont move at all, they move to much etc etc?? Whichever answer they dont need a complete set, they never do, anyone whos hada GT or GTS legset out knows why, the biggest part of the whole lot is just a big lump of steel that never goes wrong unless you do 60mph into something head on.... theres a small linkage at the bottom with a few bearings in, but nothing major expensive... even if you need the entire hub with bearings its only £40 retail... sounds like they just dont want to do it to me
I have known some of the shock units to sieze, and they aint cheap, about £70 for a genuine, which is why lots of people end up with fancy go faster items for not much more £££...
As for the engine mount bushes... yes they have probably gone, you do get some that do, and its normally the odd one that doesnt get greased from the factory and ends up eating itself... this is part cheap but labour expensive... the worst case is having to buy the whole lot including brackets etc etc and youll spoil £90 in bits... but if the play is only slight then chances are it just needs bushes and spacers at about £30... you will spoil a good hour and a bit doing it though, so depending on dealers rates it can be a pricey repair..
If you can wait till august as im off on holiday and you fancy a ride over to sunny lowestoft, ill happily take a look for ya.
How much was the quote to fix it then... |

Thanks cheeky, i thought i might be getting my leg lifted a bit! At first when i picked the scoot up the girl on the counter said, wait for it....£750! But i asked for it broken down and the written quote arrived this morning. It lists a total of 32 parts including every nut bolt washer bearing and bush! The forks i was told had a bit of play in the bearings but also there is no travel in the downward direction. This i was told was the linkage seized at the bottom which might be able to be freed up but would soon seize again.
For the engine mounts they have listed swing arm, nuts bushes buffers and on and on.... Total for parts £540 and 5 hrs labour £200 so ive saved £10 woo hoo!!!!
Thansk for the offer to take a look. She is currently laid up in the garage and is going nowhere fast! Im still reeling from the shock! But i need some wheels to get to work hence why i thought about getting rid....
Thanks again, will stay in touch...have a good one....... |
