I have just installed a Polini variator with 13.5g PM weights. The acceleration compared to stock is phenomenal, although I haven't tested the top end yet. Before, on full throttle, the rev counter only hit about 7000 rpm and now it hits almost 9000. I installed completely according to the instructions, which say that the shim which is between the variator pulleys should be removed, which I have done. When I am doing dual carriageway speeds (50mph plus) and throttle off suddenly there is MUCH more engine breaking than there used to be (almost like gentle application of the rear brake), which is accompanied by a low pitched whistle, which sounds to me like the belt. Is this normal? If I throttle off gently this doesn't happen! Any ideas or advice would be much appreciated! It is the stock belt by the way!

Are you absolutely positive??? Very Happy If so thanks for the advice... except I can't remember where the shim goes. How stupid is that? I think it goes between the variator and the front pulley... correct??

Thanks very much to you both. Shim reinstalled and noise and belt drag gone. Why can't Polini give the right instructions?? I have reduced the weights from 13.5g to 12.75g and she now feels like a rocket ship. I had ridden her for about 30 miles without the shim and there was very obvious black dusting from the belt which was rapidly being worn. It's a new belt so don't foresee any problems. I'll replace it in about 7,500 miles to be on the safe side!
