|
|
Having just run into some spare cash, I have decided to fit my GT out with a 210cc cylinder kit. The best price for a Malossi cylinder kit seems to be with PM Tuning, but I see that in their tuning recommendations they have a Polini 210cc cylinder kit.
Does anyone here know anything about the Polini kit and how it compares with the Malossi?
My scooter already has a PM exhaust and Malossi camshaft, CDI and clutch springs, and is about to be fitted with a J.Costa variator, so the cylinder seems to be the next thing on the agenda.
And don't anyone suggest trading the scooter in for a GTS. I love my GT.

Iv'e not seen a Polini kit but have fitted a few Malossi ones.
My only gripe with the Malossi kits is having to trim the head gaskets around the stud holes.
Not doing so can write off a piston and bore!!!!!
I'd say if the Polini comes with gaskets that are ready to use then I'd go with them.
In this day and age we should be able to make them from the factory to just drop on and not have to fanny about with gaskets.
So if your listening Mr Malossi, the phrase is "Could do better".
The rest of the Malossi kit is the dogs bollox.
You need the big valves and the correct porting which is the bit of the jigsaw that makes you see the picture.
With all the stuff fitted you'll see 19bhp at the wheel.
Miss any one part out and you'll be lucky to hit 15bhp.
And the new Malossi 4stroke crank is a must.
I've just had my first big end go on the first 19bhp motor we did a year ago and bet it won't be the last!!!
Was fcuking quick tho, a match for any unported 172 runner.
By the way 19bhp costs £2500 in parts & porting.
My labour came free on these development scoots but not now it's done and dusted.
Enjoy but don't expect a beast until the last bit of the jigsaw is fitted.
That extra 4bhp is well worth the spend. _________________ Creator of the fastest VESPA GTS in the world!....(until proven otherwise!) |

Thanks Russpeed for a very informative reply. I posted the same query on ModernVespa forum, and several reported bad experiences with the 210 kit. I certainly don't want to spend that sort of money on an old GT.
I may rethink the GTS option, but I don't like the GTS saddle, digital instruments, riding light and carrier. Would need to do some swaps with a GT owner. But GTS's do come in some nice colours.

Except that mine is a GT200, not a GT125.
If I had a GT125, the very first mod I would do would be the 210 kit.
But I would be quite happy to just keep up with the GTS250s. My top speed is 120kph, but I have little opportunity to use it, so I am more interested in acceleration and in power in the 90-110kph range for overtaking.
I had terrific acceleration after fitting 8.5 gram Dr.Pulley sliders (and no loss of top speed), but then the variator came loose and the scoot was out of use for 10 weeks, and next time I used it the acceleration was gone. I have changed everything in the transmission and also stripped the carb, but cannot find any reason.

Mike,
good luck with finding where your acceleration has disappeared to........
I know what you are saying with the GTS. I like the instruments, the rack is ok if you affix it permanently down (mine is cable tied) and I sit 'on the hump' of the seat. The riding light is neither here nor there for me.
Overall no great improvements on the GT from a styling point of view, but there are a few mechanical improvements .
Looks like they are running out new GT's now. I haven't heard if Piaggio have stopped production, but since the 250ie came out I believe new sales of the GT have dropped right away. |

Some bits of this particular jigsaw are on ebay right now well cheap!
http://search.ebay.co.uk/_W0QQsassZrusspeed
By the way if you do everything above but keep your 200 barrel on your in for only 17.5 bhp as all the maths is based on 210cc with a certain swept volume in the head which leaving the 200 kit on mucks right up.
There you go, all the experience of years in one short topic! _________________ Creator of the fastest VESPA GTS in the world!....(until proven otherwise!) |

Reply delayed because I have been hlidaying in New Zealand for two weeks.
Thanks for the shopping list, but there is not much there for me. I have a power cam, and I will not be interested in a gear-up kit until I have considerable more power. So that only leaves the big valve kit, and I have a set of Malossi valve springs sitting in the garage, not yet installed.
My Costa variator was waiting for me when I got home, so this coming week I shall fit that, restore the original contra spring to go with it, and replace my Malossi white clutch springs with the yellow ones.
Performance mods aside, I must chase up my order for eco-leather handgrips, and will place an order for a PM analogue tachometer.
Enough to go on with.

Russ, an afterthought on my interest in the 210 kit.
I have one of the slowest GT200s that I know of. I ran mine in strictly according to the book, and THEN read "Break In Secrets" by Pat McGivern (MotoMan), who says that the only way to get performance is to "ride it like you stole it" from day one (OK, a bit more complicated than that)!
So I thought that a 210 kit would give me a second chance at running it in (or should I say NOT running it in) using McGivern's method.
