Simon, just to clarify when you get a optimate battery charger it comes with a small lead (red and black wire with connections on each end) which is designed to be permanently connected to the battery,but this lead is too short so all i did was extend the two wires and refit the connector bearing in mind you need the appropriate cable, the cable i used was rated at 18 amp. I did a proper soldered joint(not a connector) and the cable running up to the glove box was heat shrink wrapped and all tied in nicely with the loom.. If your only running a ciggy lighter you could quite easily make a lead up with a couple of connectors fitted . hope this helps.. Dont forget if your running a kettle dont use too small a gauge cable or your your probably be able to cook a full breakfast on a nice open flame |

I fitted a permanent Optimate/Accumate fused lead to the battery on my X9 500. The lead emerged under the seat and I kept the bike's battery regularly charged by connecting the charger to that lead. The 12v socket inside the X9 underseat storage area was not too good at maintaining a good connection, hence the permanent lead.
Having moved on to a GTS 250ie, I have an Optimate/Accumate permanent lead running from the battery up through the leg shield and emerging inside the glovebox. This lead has the rubber weatherproof cap. I now keep the GTS charged regularly via the lead. I'm waiting to collect Accumate's latest attachment, which is a proper car sized cigar socket, which will connect to the permanent lead at the glovebox via the white two pin connectors. The car sized cigar socket will accept everything that a car socket does. Such as a small Michelin air-compressor for carrying on long rides/touring.
Also, I'll be using the socket for plugging in my Tomtom GPS, although I have yet to work out how to fit a bracket to hold the Tomtom. I suppose I could just have the Tomtom connected inside the glove box, so that it was available to be checked as and when needed.
I too do not want 'distractions' in my peripheral vision while riding, and a Tomtom would be a possible distraction. My X9 500 used to light up like Blackpool Illuminations when it was switched on, making it a bike that was lovely to ride, but with a few too many electronic gizmos on each of its two dash boards. The GTS has just what I need to know, in clear dials and bargrade readouts on its dashboard.
I have the Tomtom One XL, which doesn't have bluetooth broadcast to a mobile. It only receives Bluetooth broadcast from a mobile. This means I won't be able to hear the voice directions, but just as someone else has already written in here, I shall keep an eye on the Tomtom screen as and when I need to.
I have always written the road numbers in large print in their order of appearing in front of me, on my trips. A smallish piece of paper is enough as long as I can read the numbers. In fact, the exercise of writing the road numbers down helps to impress them into my memory.
I recommend the Motrax 'The World's Strongest Map' for the UK and Ireland. It is 100 percent waterproof and tear resistant and it is half A4 size. (A5 ? ) It fits inside the clear plastic wallets that come for attaching onto motorbike petrol tanks. It fits inside my Oxford Scooter Bag's Clear Plastic top wallet.

route writen in permanent marker pen on masking tape stuck to the headset has been a favourite "twat nav" of mine for years
and yes the tuff maps are "A5"
another good thing, giving larger scale is to buy a cheap (or use last years cast off) AA or similar map, cut out the bit you need (usually the last leg of the journey) and laminate it, to keep any damp out use it over and over again like that, good idea to have a back up plan if the sat nav fails, masking tape gets stolen or some other similar dissastor _________________

following reading igarret's and AlbertTeddyBear's posts i searched and found my optimate charging cable (the one you can permanently mount instead of using the crocodile clip connectors) took it to work with me and extended it ready for fitting at the weekend, i twisted and soldered the new length of cable in place and covered the joint with shrinktube, i used plenty of new 1mm cable, will thread it thru then trim to suit befroe crimping on the eyelet connectors for the battery.

The beauty of the Optimate fused cable is that you know which is the + and which is the - so you won't get them mixed up. The fuse holder tends to give the secret away..
I like the way you've gone about doing it. Additional length, ready to cut to size and all in the firm's time.
